74 days, 44 seconds

I can't believe how fast the time has passed.  I'm preparing to make my final payment, I've completed all my reading and quizzes, and now all I need are a plane ticket and a time to arrive at the airport!

But before I hit S. Africa, have I mentioned I'm going to Costa Rica this summer too?  That's right... two weeks in CR in a Spanish immersion trip with my school.  Or is it my former school since I'm heading to St. Mary's next year?  Either way it's a summer full of travelin' for the Tulen Chick!

Wrap raising

Hey there,
Just a quick up date about how everything is going.

Today was my last day wrapping at Grammy and Nonnas toy store. I raised nearly 300 dollars and am so grateful for their help in this endeavor. I am nearly half-way to my goal of four thousand! Thank you to every one who donated on  http://peerbackers.com/projects/sassalope-on-south-african-safari/  - and just donated in general.  While I was wrapping at the toy store I was surprised to learn how many people have either been to S. Africa and or have family or friends there. Many had great advice for me, and most were very surprised that I was trying to raise money to go to a developing country. But what made people want to donate the most (at least I think) was how I told them about my love for travel. I really love to learn hands on and what better way to do so then to travel?  My curiosity is so peaked by other cultures, religions, and architecture.

Anyway, thank you so much... My love to all

                          Ashley!!!

South Africa... here I come.

Welcome to my journey.  Or journeys.  I love to travel, and I love to learn! So traveling with People to People is the perfect way for me to do both. And have fun while I'm at it! In the summer of 2012 I am going to travel to South Africa with a delegation of  highschool students from aorund the United States.

In Cape Town we have the opportunity to explore Robben Island with a former political detainee, spend a day in a local high school helping students with their projects, and work with volunteers in local service projects in schools, organizations, and after-school programs.

Then we travel to Johannesburg where we get to visit Nelson Mandela’s family home (how cool is that??), join an African drum circle, join in games and dancing during a visit to a local primary school, and visit the  Apartheid Museum.

And the we get to go on safari!!!  And learn about a lion-breeding project, watch for leopards, lions, buffalo, elephant, and rhinos (oh my!) and spend some nights around the campfire in a boma, a traditional circular meeting spot, at the bush camp.  I can't wait!

But before I go I have to raise over $4000.  So follow my journey which starts today and ends in the African bush in June of 2012!
